Going into Business with a Partner

 

Should I go into business with my wife, partner or spouse?

The answer is complicated

I’ve had clients who’ve been really successful doing this and in the last year I’ve had 3 clients leave the programs or their business due to a divorce and I’ve experienced my own divorce where we were partners in the clinic.

It made navigating work and our relationship really difficult, though it wasn’t the reason for our divorce, it didn’t help.

Have a Conversation – multiple

 

Must have a shared vision


Discuss and divide the roles/responsibilities


Create boundaries around working together 

  • Date night with no talk about work
  • Weekly check in about your relationship
  • Weekly meeting dedicated to work/business


There may be 1 person who seems to do more in the business and more at home

It’s not a contest

Both partners should always be trying to do more than the other

Here some things to consider:
1) Do you both want to fill the same roles? Ie: both treat patients, both do the marketing, both be the visionary?
Or Are your strengths and interests complimentary?
2) Should to have a trial period and need an exit strategy if it doesn’t work or feel right.
Set expectations, have a “safe” word

Should have an operating agreement that deals with dissolution of the business, and depending on the laws of your state, your business may belong to your partner in marriage whether they work in the business or not.

12 lessons I learned from getting a divorce

I’m officially divorced!

We were together for 22 years, married for 17 and Yes we had been having issues, seen therapists, regularly checked in and talked through our challenges, even made it through covid, but then something shifted.

A few days after PT Biz con 2022 my wife at the time asked for a divorce.

The last 15 months have been some of the hardest up and down months in my life, especially 2 months directly after PT Biz Con Live 2023 this year.

I’m sure if you’ve been a long time listener you might have noticed a shift. Maybe you haven’t. Maybe you guessed something was up.

Up until now I’ve been hesitant to share this because 


#1 I didn’t believe it was really true and didn’t know how to talk about it or who I could without disparaging someone I knew and loved for 22 years

#2 I didn’t want to share anything until I knew that everything was complete, finalized and official because I didn’t want it to make my life even more difficult

#3 I didn’t want to make it all about me because my duty on this podcast and in my coaching business is to my subscribers, listeners and clients so it’s taken a while to start to process what happened in a way that my story can hopefully be helpful to you

I hope if you are currently in a committed relationship that you can learn a few things to make it even better

 

And if you are looking for your next relationship that you can learn something from me to make it even better and


If you are divorced or working through a divorce you know you are not alone, because I know I sure felt that way at times.

I have a lot of lessons to share in upcoming episodes about business and life and I feel like I need to share this with you so there is context as I try to pass along the lessons I’ve learned through this process in business and in life.

So far everything is chill, the kids are doing great, I’ve got 50/50 custody and have spent more time with them in the last year and a half and built a stronger bond with them, than I was able in the years before separating.

Lessons Learned:

1) When things are tough, lean on your friends and team

2) Systems to grow your business are vital. – what I learned and set up in BlackBelt helped me continue to grow my business when I didn’t have the capacity to do more than the basic necessities.

3) Take your time – don’t rush the process. In NC you have to be separated a year before filing for a divorce. I’m glad I waited because what I learned along the way, changed my outcome and situation.

4) karma is a bitch

6) It’s the tough things that you go through that will make you even stronger

7)Aligned in vision and tell the truth.

8) No and the truth doesn’t hurt my feelings

9) There is not “the one” there is “the one right now”

10) Make the decision and be ok with the other person’s emotional regulation

11) Find someone who supports you and doesn’t drain you

I have a clear and defined path forward. I’m no longer being held back in my business and  now have a higher bar to earn even more money to ensure that the amount of $ I am paying out every month is inconsequential to me


I’ve already had a few close friends reach out to me this year for relationship advice.
It was weird because I don’t feel like I’m the best to give relationship advice, lol! but, they were both struggling in their marriage and I had just been through the worst of it.

I recently hit the One Million dollar mark for a 12 month rolling year in my coaching business, and I wanted to share some behind the scenes with you!

I use SamCart, Click Funnels, and some other avenues to collect revenue, but I will show you my SamCart account today. 

I’ll explain the different types of monthly recurring revenue I use and why that’s so important to the growth of an online business. I didn’t start that in my business until 2018!  

I talk about how I presented different offers and then eventually changed things based on feedback. What is important to remember is you have to be willing to change what you’re doing based on what people need and people want. 

If something is causing you stress, it may not be worth it, even if it’s making you money. 

I like to use SamCart to manage my MRR. It’s so much easier than using Stripe or Click Funnels. If you want to get started with SamCart, use this affiliate link!

6 Ways to Start a Business as a PTA – Physical Therapist Assistant

1) Go back to school and get a massage license

If you like the hands on aspect, this could be exactly what you need!

2) Go back to school and become a PT

I know this is a lot of work, but it could be the right approach for you. If this is what you really want to do, this is perfect for starting your own business.

3) Start a PT practice and hire or contract a PT to do your evaluations and re-evaluations

I can’t think of a better business model that someone else doing the work and you getting paid. 

4) Start an online business or Telehealth 2.0 practice

This could be a coaching business, like an online group coaching program.  This is more of personal training, but you background makes your skillset more valuable than a run of the mill trainer.

5) Affiliate Marketing

You can sell other people’s stuff online! It may not be one of the easiest, but it’s definitely possible!

6) Consulting

There are many types of consulting. You can consult with other small business owners, or even larger companies on their products.

Online Course: 8 ways to make more money

The number one mistake people make is the build the online course before the sell it. This is how you make mistakes! Sell it first so you can give people what they ACTUALLY want.  

  1. Make more offers of your online course

That means as soon as someone opts it to something, give them the next logical step. The more offers you make the more opportunities people will have to purchase from you.   

2. Show Proof 

People want so see something works BEFORE they buy! Show testimonials. Show them how you have done it before.  People need to know it can be real for them. 

3. Build Scarcity

Show people that your time or the product is limited. Don’t show manufactured scarcity, show them something is limited in order to get them off the fence. 

4. Raise the price of your online course

It seems obvious, right? If you tell people about the price increase, you’re also creating a type of scarcity and can give people the incentive to get off the fence and take action.  

5. Run The 5 Day Sales Sequence

This is a trend and true sequence I have personally used and many of my clients have used to talk about a bonus ending or a price increasing, but it tells people it’s time to buy.

6. Automate Your Offer

 Once you have your proven offer, it’s time to make it evergreen. You can automate the process to make money while you’re not even working. We use the PT Email Engine for these automations. But you don’t want to automate it until you know it works. 

7. Make it sustainable: Monthly Recurring Revenue

This is where the real magic happens. There are many ways to generate monthly recurring revenue, and the best way for someone else may not be the best way for you. 

8. Hire a Coach 

Working with different coaches has been the thing to accelerate my earnings the most. I didn’t get here by myself. I leveraged coaching to help me fast track my learning and growth. And that’s what you should be doing, too!

There are traits that every successful physical therapy business owner has. I’ve seen it time and time again! Keep reading to see how many you already exhibit. And then make a plan to get the rest. 

Trait #1) Successful business owners know their why and purpose. Start by getting clear on your why. It’s easy to lose momentum and motivation when things get hard if you aren’t clear on your why.

Trait #2) Successful business owners surround themselves with winners. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying you’re the sum of the 5 people you are around the most. Well, that’s true in business, as well! Be around people are are farther along in their business journey so you can learn. Success leaves clues.

Trait # 3) Successful business owners are resilient and work hard to figure it out. Entrepreneurship is NOT easy! How you respond in the face of adversity will go a long way to supporting your longevity.

Do you have a neglected email list or have you purchased an existing email from someone else? I explain why you need to perform routine maintenance on your list.

If your email list is stagnant and unresponsive, it will lower deliverability, or even worse, getting marked as spam. Recently, I had the opportunity to acquire an existing email list. I take you through the exact steps of what I did to revitalize it and introduce myself to the subscribers.
